The Optical
Materials Department focuses on extending the performance
of optical sensor systems and assuring their survival in aggressive
environments. Historically, the department has emphasized highly
durable and special function optical materials, as well as
optically active microtextured surfaces and coatings. These
materials are applied as anti-reflective surfaces, cladding
for aircraft sensor transparencies, optical hardening layers,
transparent conductors, and organic light emitting diodes.
We have recently initiated development of sensor systems for
explosives and chemical agents, and lead a large research effort
on biomimetic optical lens systems. Advanced optical thin film
coating capabilities enable research and limited-rate initial
production, supported by extensive spectroscopic and microscopic
characterization equipment
and expertise.
